Personnel, financial, and other records of a Duluth, Minnesota-based railroad owned for many years by United States Steel Corporation that transported iron ore and taconite pellets from mines on the Vermilion and Mesabi iron ranges in northeastern Minnesota to ports at Two Harbors (Minnesota) and Duluth, for transportation via ore boats to eastern steel mills. Includes records of two prececessor railroad companies and several subsidiary land, mining, power, and transfer railway companies.

The Duluth and Iron Range Railway Company (D&IR) was incorporated on December 21, 1874, by an Ontonagon, Michigan-based syndicate headed by Peter Mitchell that was exploring for iron ore on the eastern end of what would eventually become the Mesabi Iron Range.
